The Red River Transportation Line was organized in 1872 by James J. Hill and Norman Kittson to operate steamboats and barges on the Red River of the North. It was formally incorporated as the Red River Transportation Company in 1874. Steamboats operated by the company includes Selkirk, International, Alpha, Dakota, Cheyenne, Moorhead, Pluck, Grand Forks, and H.W. Alsop. The company ceased operations around 1902. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
